Ever since 2020, Japandi has been a giant interior design hit. No coincidence because the calming, serene atmosphere created by this minimalist style of living offers the perfect antidote to our busy lives. In a world full of stimuli, there is nothing finer than coming home to a functional, ordered space where unnecessary items are eliminated.
Japandi anno 2023 still stands for bright spaces, a soft color palette and natural materials but the living style has evolved somewhat over the past year.
"We see in recent months that Japandi has taken on a warmer look. For example, we are integrating more and more dark woods such as walnut or black stained wood. We also notice that clear woods are giving way more often to the dark elegance of walnut. The visible grain and natural shades immediately give your interior that luxurious feeling," explains interior stylist Moniek Visser.
By carefully selecting natural, quality materials - such as wood, rattan, bamboo and linen - Japandi puts the focus on sustainability.
"With high-quality designer products in warm, neutral and earthy tones, you create a timeless look that will last for years. Japandi is therefore not a fleeting trend," says Moniek Visser.
Like Japandi, the strength of Scandinavian design lies in its simplicity and minimalist look. This is what makes both living styles so close to each other. Against Japandi, a Scandinavian interior is more characterized by the use of white tones, light woods and soft pastels. But again, "less is more".
"If you want to incorporate Scandinavian style into your home, it's important to make sure you don't have too much clutter everywhere. Stuff is best stored in nice neutral storage boxes or baskets. And if you choose some light pastel shades within this style, make sure you add this subtly. This creates balance and tranquility in the interior," says interior stylist Moniek Visser.
